The National Olympic Committee of Somalia held its annual general assembly at Shamo Hotel in Mogadishu on 1-2 of January 2014. On his welcoming speech the secretary of NOCSOM Duran Farah welcomed the members, governmental representatives and other guests and thanked for maintaining the culture and being present at the annual meeting as it pulls sporting bodies of the country together.
Presentinghis annual report to the assembly the secretary highlighted the activities carried out by Somali Olympic Committee for the year of 2013 including but not limited the establishment of regional offices to promote Olympic values, organising Mogadishu peace promoting run, establishment of long-term athletics development programme with Athletics federations and finally the building project of the first ever Somali Olympic Committee building which is expected to be open for daily use in the very near future.
Continuing his report the secretary stated that Somali Olympic Committee is valuable member of international organisations and maintains its close relationship with International Olympic Committee, Olympic Solidarity, African Olympic Committee Association and Islamic Solidarity on matters of development and education and thanked all of them for their continues support and guidance for NOCSOM to improve the working conditions of national sports organisations within a country that has experienced a prolonged civil war and destruction of all sports facilities that made almost impossible for sports organisations to function.
All affiliated associations and federations explained to the assembly their achievements of the past year and plans for this year but the assembly radically lauded the video presentation and short documentary presented by the Football Federation which outlined the national team’s participation to international competitions, commencement of different football leagues within the country and the completion of international standard football ground in Mogadishu in 2013 which is funded by FIFA Goal Project.
Former basketball/football players and coaches who were invited to the assembly showed their appreciation to Somali Olympic Committee and its affiliation members for their dedication and persistence to develop Somali sports with very limited resource and facilities and urged to take one more step further as the stability and security of the country improves. They also vowed to take their role as sports communities in the Diaspora in order to sustain their relationship with Somali Olympic Committee and to get involve for identifying and nurturing talented athletes that can possibly bring medals to the country.
The president of Somali Olympic Committee Abdullahi Tarabiwho spoke to the assembly on the closing day thanked to all affiliated members for the healthy relationship they preserved with NOCSOM and reminded them that working together is the only way they can salvage Somali sports from its complete devastation caused by the collapse of the central governmentfollowed turmoil of the country.
“Let me take this opportunity to thank you for your determined efforts and support you have shown to us for the past 12 months and would also like to congratulate you for all the projects accomplished within the last 12 months those we have been all witnessed, evaluated and reviewed during the assembly and wish you the best for the execution of other projects in plan for the year of 2014” said the former national basketball coach and president of NOCSOM Abdullahi Tarabi
The Somali Olympic Committee held the assembly annually to discuss national plan for sports development, evaluate the completed projects and discuss the upcoming projects and plans with all stakeholders of NOCSOM, government officials and sports experts.
