Funded by the Jordan-based Generations for peace, the 3rd edition of Generations for peace program has been implemented in the semiautonomous northeastern Somali state of Puntland under the auspice of Somali National Olympic committee which is partner with the Generations For peace. The week-long Generation for peace program which included football and basketball matches for hostile young boys from different neighborhoods, training of trainers and community awareness successfully came to an end in the city of Garowe, the regional state capital over the weekend.
The program was jointly coordinated by Abdi Salam Muse and Feisal Artan, who were trained by the Generations For peace in Jordan just two years ago. The Somali National Olympic committee senior vice president for international relations Duran Ahmed Farah told the media on Sunday that the GFP programs were successfully implemented in different cities in the country.
"The 3rd edition of the program was successfully concluded in Puntland and we hope that early next moth another edition will be launched in the capital Mogadishu which witnessed the deadliest civil wars and the worst unrest in the country for the past two decades" the Somali NOC senior vice president for international relations noted.
He said that such initiative is playing a key role in peace building and public integration in this war-ravaged country through sporting events and other empowerment programs.
"I am really very grateful to Prince Feisal Al Hussein of Jordan the founder of the GPF and the Jordanian national Olympic committee president and all Generations for peace volunteers who really made such positive initiative operate in Somalia" Mr. Duran Farah added during his press conference in the capital Mogadishu.
He outlined that the Generations for peace programs helped many Somali youths in different towns and cities to refrain from their former bad habits such as taking up guns, theft and drug abuse.
