With Somali sports fully recovering from decades-long conflicts, the president of the national Olympic committee of Somalia Duran Ahmed Farah has called on the lawless country’s business companies to help the development of Somali sport in terms of financing the local sports activities.

“There is no any sport in the world that goes without sponsorship, so on behalf of the Somali National Olympic committee I urge the Somali business communities in and outside Somalia to help invest our sport so that we can over come the challenges ahead” the Somali NOC president Duran Ahmed Farah said in a press statement on Tuesday.

He said that for the past 22 years of lack of a functioning government in the country Somali NOC and its member federations have been the country’s flag carriers, but the governmental role and as well as the role of sponsorship from local businesses was still missing.

“Now we are under preparations for the upcoming world Olympic Games in London and Somalia will be there for participation, but if we had sponsorships for our national federations I am sure that Somalia could have scored tangible successes in the Olympic games” Duran said in his Tuesday’s statement.

The president noted that investment from Somali business community was very much important for the country’s sport promotion urging them to play their role in the development of Somali sport which is recovering from years of set backs caused by the long-running civil wars and instability in the country.

“Our National federations are so active and for example the football Federation never missed even a single tournament in the CECAFA region while, some countries in the region are some times missing from competitions, so if with the needed sponsorships Somalia could have shown wonder in international competitions and we hope that will happen in the years to come” the Somali NOC presidents statement carried.
