    The appearance of Somali contingent marched at the opening ceremony of London 2012 Olympic Games has prompted a refreshing hope for young Somalis around the world.

The appearance of Somali contingent marched at the opening ceremony of London 2012 Olympic Games has prompted a refreshing hope for young Somalis around the world.

Millions of people including Somalis around the globe watched flag bearer Zamsam Mohamed and her fellow athletes and officials entered the stadium during the opening ceremony of London 2012 while the minister of youth and sports Mohamud Jirde was among the dignitaries at the stands alongside with the president and the secretary general of Somali Olympic Committee.

“I can’t describe my feelings tonight, it is about showing the world that despite decades of war and destruction in our country we are still full of energy to take part in international tournaments and held our flag high” said the chef de mission of Somali delegates for London 2012 Omar Barajab just before he entered the stadium.

Former 1500m world champion Abdi Bile who was among the Somali delegates marched last night has also revealed his excitement about the opening ceremony “Tonight is very especial night for me and the whole of Somalis and hope this will bring Somalis together. I have been with Somali delegates and athletes competing for Olympic Games before but after very long and difficult years for Somali sports I am honoured to be part of this very hard working team of officials and athletes” said Abdi Bile Abdi.

“Being the only female athlete for Somalia and trained in difficult situations with death threats, I am very privileged to lead my nation into the biggest sports event of the world and become a role model for young Somalis especially women within the country and abroad” said Somali flag bearer Zamsam Mohamed Farah.

Seven members of Somali delegates including two athletes, a coach, manager, former national basketball player and chef de mission, former 1500m world champion and international football referee marched the opening ceremony for London 2012 for Somalia that have been watched by millions of jubilant Somalis around the globe.
